High above Monterey, California, is the town of Tortilla Flat. Here, a group of Mexican-Americans, who call themselves paisanos, spend their lives drinking, stealing, and basically being nuisances. Though they are menaces to society, these paisanos are good people underneath. Five good friends, Danny, Pilon, Pablo, Jesus Maria, and Big Joe, get drunk and decide to enlist in World War I. But they never see action, and soon return to Tortilla Flat to find that Danny has inherited two houses from his grandfather. Danny moves into one house; Pilon and the others rent the second. The four friends are drinking one night, and the second house somehow burns down. Though angry at the loss of one of his properties, Danny agrees that his friends can move into his house. The friends then get up to a lot of hijinks together, much of which is not exactly legal.
