From Kansas City to Sacramento
In 1972, the franchise moved to Kansas City, where they became the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. The team went through various name changes until 1985 when they finally became the Sacramento Kings.
The franchise faced significant challenges in Sacramento, but iconic players like Mitch Richmond, Chris Webber, and Peja Stojaković elevated the team's status with their outstanding performances on the court. The early 2000s were particularly memorable for the Kings, as they established themselves as legitimate title contenders.
Legends of the Game
The Sacramento Kings have had their fair share of basketball legends. One notable player who made an immense impact on the franchise is Oscar Robertson. Robertson played for the Royals in the early 1960s and was an unstoppable force on the court. He averaged a triple-double for an entire season, a feat that was only repeated by Russell Westbrook many years later.
Another legendary player associated with the Sacramento Kings is Chris Webber. His incredible basketball skills and versatility made him a fan favorite. Webber was part of the famous "Run-TMC" era, alongside teammates Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway, where they electrified the league with their fast-paced playing style.
Iconic Moments
The Sacramento Kings have had several iconic moments in their history. One unforgettable moment came in the 2002 Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Kings, led by Chris Webber, Mike Bibby, and Vlade Divac, pushed the series to seven games, but controversial officiating decisions ultimately cost them a chance at the NBA Finals.
Another remarkable moment occurred in 2011 when the Kings played their first game in Sacramento after rumors of the team relocating. The fans demonstrated their immense dedication and passion by filling the arena with energy, sending a powerful message that the Kings belonged in Sacramento.
