This short biography includes 140 Classic Photographs, handbills and posters of Vera Komissarzhevskaya, the premier actress of the Russian Silver Age of Theatre. Komissarzhevskaya worked with Constantin Stanislavki early in his career before branching out to develop her own interpretation of the "Method". Starring at the Imperial Alexandrinski Theatre, she was the first actress to portray Nina in Chekhov's The Seagull. She opened her own theatre in St. Petersburg in 1904 where she employed Vsevelod Meyerhold and Ida Rubinstein among many future stars of the Russian and World stage. Alexander Blok wrote his famous The Puppet Booth for her and premiered it on her stage. A singer, she also worked with Chaliapin and Rachmaninoff. The painter Leon Bakst created sets for her theater. She counted among her friends, Turgenev, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Diaghilev. Largely forgotten now in the West, Vera Komissarzhevskaya was a pioneer of innovative theatre and a role model for women in theatre. Please note, this is a 7,500 word biography which includes 140 classic photographs. To our knowledge, it is one of only two English language biographies available of Vera.
