The Primal Philosophy of Rousseau With Laplanche: Decoding the Essence of Human Nature
Human beings have always been curious about the nature of existence and the essence of their own being. This quest has led to the rise of various philosophical theories throughout history, each attempting to explore the depths of human existence. One such influential theory is the Primal Philosophy formulated by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, further developed by Jean Laplanche. In this article, we delve into this captivating philosophy, uncovering its core principles and its impact on our understanding of human nature.
The Primal Philosophy: A Journey into the Depths of Human Nature
Rousseau's Primal Philosophy posits that human beings are inherently good but are corrupted by society. According to Rousseau, in a natural state, humans are noble and virtuous, guided by their instinctual desires. This primal state, often referred to as the "state of nature," is portrayed as a utopia where individuals are free, equal, and self-sufficient.
Laplanche, a prominent psychoanalyst, built upon Rousseau's theory by delving into the psychological aspects of human nature. He argued that human instincts are at the core of our desires and behaviors, shaping our interactions with the world around us. He believed that understanding these primal instincts is crucial to unlocking the mysteries of human existence.

Unveiling the Influence of Primal Philosophy
The Primal Philosophy of Rousseau and Laplanche has had far-reaching effects on various fields of study. One such field is psychology, where their theories have provided a fresh perspective on human behavior. By exploring the primal nature of humans, psychologists have gained valuable insights into the complexities of our thoughts and emotions.
Moreover, this philosophy has also influenced political thought. Rousseau's concept of the "social contract" – a mutual agreement between individuals and society – has been foundational in the development of governmental systems. The idea that individuals willingly surrender some freedom to ensure the stability of society has shaped democratic principles across the globe.
The Everlasting Debate: Nature versus Nurture
One of the key debates arising from the Primal Philosophy is the age-old argument of nature versus nurture. While Rousseau believed in the innate goodness of humans, many other philosophers and scholars argue that human behavior is primarily shaped by environmental factors. This ongoing debate has fueled numerous studies and research, contributing to our understanding of human development and behavior.
Applying Primal Philosophy in the Modern World
The principles of Primal Philosophy continue to resonate in the modern world. In an increasingly complex and technologically-driven society, it is important to revisit the core aspects of human nature. By reconnecting with our primal instincts and desires, we can strive towards a more fulfilling and harmonious existence.
Furthermore, the study of Primal Philosophy encourages introspection and self-reflection. By understanding the factors that shape our behaviors and thoughts, we can make more informed choices and lead lives that align with our true nature.
The Primal Philosophy of Rousseau with Laplanche offers a captivating exploration into the depths of human nature. By uncovering our primal instincts and desires, we gain valuable insights into the essence of our existence. This philosophy has not only influenced psychology and political thought but also continues to guide individuals in understanding themselves in the modern world. Let us embark on this journey of self-discovery, peeling back the layers of societal influences to reveal our primal essence.

Primal Philosophy: Rousseau with Laplanche presents the first comprehensive study of Rousseau’s thought on the possibility of philosophy and the responsibility of the philosopher. Through a close reading of texts from throughout Rousseau’s entire corpus, together with inspiration from Jean Laplanche’s seminal work on the Freudian theory of seduction, this book positions Rousseau within a contemporary debate involving Theodor Adorno and Alain Badiou on the fate of philosophy after Heidegger. In confrontation with the radical subordination of ethics to ontology, which is characteristic of Cartesian thought and its culmination in Heidegger’s philosophical legacy, the reading of Rousseau with Laplanche elaborates the rootedness of philosophy in a process of primal seduction, which opens a way to rethink the meaning of a genuine first philosophy, not as the study of being qua being in the tradition initiated by Aristotle, but as primal philosophy, the study of the genesis of philosophy itself. The rootedness of philosophy in a process of primal seduction then reveals the primal responsibility of the philosopher—a responsibility for human happiness found in the possibility of philosophy itself.
