Why Scots Should Rule Scotland
Scotland is known for its rich culture, history, and stunning landscapes. The land of tartan, bagpipes, and Robert Burns has a unique identity that resonates with its people. Over the years, there has been an ongoing debate about who should govern Scotland. In this article, we will explore the reasons why Scots should rule Scotland, examining the benefits it can bring to the nation and its citizens.
1. Preserving Scottish Identity
Scots ruling Scotland provides an opportunity to preserve and celebrate the unique Scottish identity. Nobody understands Scotland better than the Scots themselves. By having Scots lead the nation, the decisions made will be rooted in an understanding of the nation's history, traditions, and values. This ensures that Scotland's cultural heritage is valued and protected, contributing to the well-being of its citizens.
2. Empowering Local Communities
Scots ruling Scotland enables greater decision-making power to be vested in local communities. Being geographically closer to the issues faced by these communities, Scottish leaders can better understand their specific needs and concerns. With this understanding, they can implement policies and initiatives that cater to the local population, fostering a stronger sense of community and civic engagement.

3. Fostering Economic Growth
By having Scots in power, Scotland can align its economic policies with its unique strengths and resources. Scottish leaders can prioritize industries that make the most sense for Scotland, leading to targeted economic development and job creation. Furthermore, a government led by Scots can negotiate trade deals and investment opportunities that specifically benefit Scotland's economy, further boosting growth and prosperity for the nation.
4. Promoting Social Equality
Scots ruling Scotland opens up opportunities for greater social equality. Scots leaders can address the specific challenges faced by marginalized communities within Scotland, working towards creating a fairer and more just society. By taking ownership of their own governance, Scots can ensure that their fellow citizens have access to quality healthcare, education, and social welfare systems, narrowing the gap between different socio-economic groups.
5. Strengthening Political Engagement
Having Scots rule Scotland can enhance political engagement among the Scottish population. When leaders come from the same background as their constituents, it can create a sense of relatability and trust. This, in turn, encourages greater participation in the political process, as individuals feel that their voice matters and that their interests are being represented effectively. Ultimately, this strengthens the foundation of democracy within the nation.
There are compelling reasons why Scots should rule Scotland. From preserving Scottish identity and empowering local communities to fostering economic growth, promoting social equality, and strengthening political engagement, having Scots in power can lead to a brighter future for Scotland. By embracing this vision of empowerment and progress, Scotland can continue to thrive as a nation while cherishing its unique characteristics and values.

Alsadair Gray wrote the first edition of this book for the 1992 general election. In it he showed the poor state of present-day Scotland; gave a concise, elegant history of the Scottish people and their relations with the rulers of England; argued that Scotland should have a strong government elected by its own people. Five years later Scotland still does not have that and its state has worsened.
The original chapters have been revised and largely rewritten. New chapters dealing with Scottish education, land owning, and law and the Labour Party bring the argument to date.
This is a more openly political book than the first edition, written to persuade people who feel their vote does not much influence how their country is managed that Scottish independence matters, and that only one political party is honestly working to achieve it.
