The Kids Grew Up, The Dog Died, We Took Off
Life is a journey, filled with unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes, the path we thought we were meant to follow takes us in a completely different direction. The story of our family is no exception. The kids grew up, the dog died, and we took off on an adventure that changed our lives forever.
The Road Less Traveled
Our story begins in a small suburban neighborhood, where we were living what appeared to be the picture-perfect life. We had a loving family, a beautiful home, and a loyal dog named Max. But as the children grew older and started pursuing their own dreams, we found ourselves longing for something more.
One day, while reminiscing about our dreams of travel and exploration, we made a bold decision. We decided to sell our house, pack up our belongings, and hit the road in a camper van. It was a leap of faith, but we were ready to embark on a new chapter in our lives.

In Search of Freedom
Our first destination was a hidden gem tucked away in the mountains. We were longing for a sense of freedom and serenity, and this place promised to deliver just that. As we drove through winding roads and breathtaking landscapes, we couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the tranquil sounds of nature and the welcoming smiles of fellow travelers. We set up camp near a crystal-clear river, where we spent our days hiking, fishing, and simply enjoying each other's company. It was a taste of freedom we had never experienced before.
Lessons in Letting Go
As we continued our journey, we encountered various challenges along the way. One particular challenge was saying goodbye to Max, our beloved furry companion who had been by our side for over a decade. His passing taught us the importance of cherishing every moment we have with our loved ones.
Letting go of the familiar and embracing the unknown was a recurring theme throughout our adventure. We learned to adapt to new environments, make friends from different walks of life, and appreciate the beauty of simplicity. The kids, who had once been tethered to their devices, now found joy in exploring nature and engaging in meaningful conversations.
A Taste of Different Cultures
As our camper van journey took us from one place to another, we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in different cultures and traditions. From vibrant festivals in far-flung villages to savoring exotic cuisine - each experience broadened our horizons and enriched our understanding of the world.
We celebrated Diwali with a local Indian family, learned to tango in Argentina, and even participated in a traditional tea ceremony in Japan. These encounters not only helped us appreciate the diversity of our planet but also fostered a sense of empathy and respect for people from all walks of life.
Rediscovering Ourselves
Amidst the adventure and exploration, we had a chance to rediscover ourselves. The fast-paced lifestyle we once lived was replaced by moments of introspection and self-reflection. We found solace in the simplicity of life on the road, free from the pressures of societal expectations.
Our journey allowed us to tap into our creativity and pursue passions we had long forgotten. The kids picked up art, embracing their inner artist, while my partner and I found solace in writing and photography. We reconnected with our true selves and found fulfillment in pursuing our dreams, no matter how unconventional they may seem.
Coming Full Circle
After years of roaming, we eventually decided to settle down in a quaint coastal town. We traded the camper van for a cozy beach house, but our sense of adventure and curiosity remained intact. The experiences and lessons we gained during our time on the road continue to shape our lives and guide us in raising our children to be compassionate, open-minded individuals.
The kids grew up, the dog died, and we took off became not just a chapter in our lives but a mantra for embracing change and embarking on life-altering journeys. Our story serves as a reminder that the unexpected can lead to some of the most transformative moments in life.
In a world where routine and conformity often guide our choices, breaking away from the norm and embracing the unknown can be a truly liberating experience. Our family's decision to let go of the familiar and embark on a journey of self-discovery was a catalyst for personal growth and deep connections.
So, if you ever find yourself questioning the path you're on, remember our story. The kids grew up, the dog died, we took off - and in doing so, we found a life beyond our wildest dreams.

Jean and Michael Gerber did what most of us only dream of doing. They sold their house, quit their jobs, and started an incredible and unforeseen journey. In Traveling without Reservations, Jean shares the story of traveling the world with her husband.
For two years, using the Greek Isles as a base, the couple crisscrossed Europe and the Middle East, learning as much about themselves as the exotic destinations they explored. In vivid journal entries, Jean chronicles their travels to countries including Turkey, Switzerland, Italy, and Israel, recording the astonishing sights and rituals, the variety of sanitation arrangements, the hikes and camping, the burros and camels and sheep, and the quirks of their semi-trusty Subaru minibus.
Traveling without Reservations gives a playful account of the unexpected twists and turns life takes when traveling without fixed plansadapting to new languages, cultures, and customs; embracing the energy of an eclectic mix of people; enjoying a myriad of culinary delights; and learning to give up control.
An enchanting read, fueled not only by Jean Gerbers irrepressible and irreverent humor, but also by her extraordinary ability to connect with and celebrate the many faces of human nature. Her account of her travels through Europe and the Middle East is earthy, joyful, sometimes poignant, and always hilarious. I loved it!Franny Billingsley, National Book Award Finalist
