For nature enthusiasts, the scenic landscapes of the Lake District and the charming villages of the Cotswolds provide a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Take a leisurely walk along the peaceful lakeshores, breathe in the fresh countryside air, and soak in the breathtaking beauty that inspired renowned writers including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

Amsterdam: Where Canals and Culture Collide

Next on our journey is the magical city of Amsterdam, renowned for its picturesque canals, magnificent architecture, and a thriving arts scene. Board a traditional canal boat and cruise along the UNESCO-listed Canal Ring, which offers a glimpse into Amsterdam's storied past. Admire the elegant canal houses and the charming bridges that adorn the waterways, creating an enchanting atmosphere unique to this captivating city.

No visit to Amsterdam is complete without exploring its world-famous museums. Discover the masterpieces of Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, or immerse yourself in the fascinating world of modern art at the Van Gogh Museum. For a truly extraordinary experience, venture beyond the conventional and step into the quirky realm of the Museum of Bags and Purses or the eccentric Museum Vrolik.

A vibrant cultural melting pot, Amsterdam offers a variety of experiences for every taste. Explore the vibrant Jordaan district, known for its eclectic mix of art galleries, trendy boutiques, and cozy cafes. Pay a visit to the bustling Albert Cuyp Market, where you can sample local delicacies and shop for unique souvenirs. And of course, don't miss the opportunity to indulge in the city's famous stroopwafels and Dutch cheeses.

Cologne: A Fusion of Past and Present

Our final destination takes us to Cologne, a charming German city that seamlessly blends history with contemporary vibrancy. Dominated by the magnificent Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, this city immediately captivates visitors with its gothic architecture and undeniable grandeur. Climb to the top of the cathedral's spire for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.

But Cologne is not just about its iconic cathedral. Explore the vibrant streets of the Old Town, where you'll find a plethora of pubs, beer gardens, and traditional brew houses. Treat your taste buds to the famously spicy Cologne mustard and indulge in the local Kölsch beer, which holds a special place in the hearts of the city's residents.

For an immersive cultural experience, visit the Museum Ludwig, renowned for its extensive modern and contemporary art collection. Discover provocative artworks by the likes of Picasso, Warhol, and Lichtenstein, and gain a deeper understanding of the artistic movements that have shaped our world.

In 2012 the authors flew to Europe in order to view David Hockney's "A Bigger Picture" Exhibition at Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Their itinerary also included England and Amsterdam. At the end of each day they wrote up their day's experiences and posted them to their blog. Collected here as part of their "Travel With Us" series, "Travel with us to Amsterdam, England and Cologne" is a humorous eye witness account of their adventures.

Highlights of the book include a visit to the Anne Frank and Van Gogh museums in Amsterdam, visits to the Christmas Markets, the Claudius Therme spa, and the Hockney Exhibit in Cologne as well as various misadventures, including sprained ankles, stinky towels, surly waiters, and breakdowns on trains. This book, which includes photos, is an honest and often very funny portrait of the joys and frustrations that come with international travel.
