Transforming Urban Transport From Automobility To Sustainable Transport
Urban transport plays a crucial role in our daily lives. It is the backbone of our cities, connecting people and providing them with access to employment, education, and leisure activities. However, the increasing reliance on automobility has led to a myriad of problems. From traffic congestion and air pollution to inadequate public transportation systems, our cities are facing a crisis that calls for a sustainable transport revolution.
The Era of Automobility
In the 20th century, the automobile became a symbol of freedom and progress. With its ability to provide personal mobility, it quickly became the preferred mode of transport for many urban dwellers. However, this reliance on cars has come at a great cost. Traffic congestion has worsened, leading to increased travel times and frustration for commuters. The emissions from cars have contributed significantly to air pollution, leading to respiratory problems and other health issues. Additionally, the vast amount of space dedicated to roads and parking lots has hindered the development of more sustainable and livable cities.
The Need for Sustainable Transport
It is evident that a paradigm shift is necessary to transform urban transport into a sustainable system. Sustainable transport aims to provide mobility while minimizing environmental impact, promoting public health, and improving social equity. It focuses on reducing car dependency and promoting alternative modes of transportation such as public transit, cycling, and walking.

The Role of Public Transit
One of the key components of a sustainable transport system is the development of efficient and accessible public transit networks. Investing in high-quality public transportation not only reduces traffic congestion but also improves air quality and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It provides affordable and equitable mobility options for all residents, regardless of their socioeconomic status. By integrating modern technologies and implementing innovative solutions, such as smart ticketing systems and real-time information updates, public transit can become a reliable and attractive alternative to car travel.
Promoting Active Modes of Transportation
In addition to public transit, encouraging active modes of transportation, such as cycling and walking, is crucial for transforming urban transport. By providing safe and well-connected infrastructure, cities can create an environment that prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists. Investing in bicycle lanes, pedestrian-friendly streets, and bike-sharing programs can motivate more people to choose these sustainable modes of transportation. Not only does this reduce traffic congestion, but it also improves public health by promoting physical activity.
The Role of Technology
Technology plays a significant role in transforming urban transport. From ride-sharing platforms to electric vehicles and autonomous shuttles, technological advancements have the potential to revolutionize the way we move around our cities. Electric vehicles, for instance, can help reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Ride-sharing platforms can promote carpooling, reducing the number of cars on the road. Autonomous shuttles can provide efficient and affordable transportation solutions, especially in areas with limited access to public transit.
Creating Livable and Vibrant Cities
Transforming urban transport from automobility to sustainable transport goes beyond improving transportation systems. It is about creating livable and vibrant cities that prioritize people over cars. Developing mixed-use neighborhoods that integrate housing, employment, and recreation can reduce the need for long commutes. Designing urban spaces that are pedestrian-friendly, with ample green spaces and cultural amenities, can provide a higher quality of life for residents.
A Collaborative Effort
Achieving a sustainable transport system requires a collaborative effort from government authorities, urban planners, businesses, and citizens. It involves implementing policies that prioritize public transit and active modes of transportation, investing in infrastructure, and promoting behavior change through education and awareness campaigns.
The Future of Urban Transport
Transforming urban transport from automobility to sustainable transport is not a one-time effort but an ongoing process. As cities continue to grow and face new challenges, the need for sustainable transport becomes even more critical. Embracing alternative modes of transportation, utilizing technology, and creating livable cities can pave the way for a greener, healthier, and more equitable urban future.
It is time to prioritize sustainable transport over automobility. By transforming our cities into places that prioritize efficient public transit, active modes of transportation, and technology-driven solutions, we can create a better future for ourselves and the generations to come. The journey towards sustainable transport may be challenging, but the rewards are well worth it - cleaner air, reduced congestion, improved health, and a higher quality of life for all.

Transforming Urban Transport confronts head-on the dilemma faced by a world wedded to mobility: the danger of continuing along the fossil-fuelled path and the real paucity of viable technological alternatives which can be deployed in time. To respond to the dilemma, the ideal of urban transport must be changed from auto-based mobility to systems of sustainable transport in which public transport, and non-motorised transport work together to reduce climate change pressures, enhance urban quality and preserve life and health.
The book challenges the commonly held view that a combination of urbanity and higher residential density expressed in compact cities (expected to have greater public transport use) will resolve urban transport/environment problems, instead showing that transport systems can be changed to meet the environmental imperatives without the massive spatial change implied.
But the problem of change of urban transport is profoundly institutional and cultural. Changes in urban mobility and transport require local institutional policy action. To support such action, the book explores new methods of governance of transport in dispersed and concentrated cities, new techniques for assessing transport need, ways of improving childhood mobility, guidelines for political mobilization, and norms of knowledge sharing.
Drawing together leading scholars from different disciplines in Australia, Japan and China, this book provides a unique fusion of Asian and Australasian perspectives and engages with the coming needs of transport planning practitioners in both high density and dispersed cities.
