Tennessee Williams, one of the greatest playwrights in American history, has left an indelible mark on the world of theater with his exceptional dramatic works that explore themes of desire, isolation, and human connection. This year marks the tenth anniversary of Tennessee Williams On Stage, a celebration of his groundbreaking plays and their enduring legacy. Let us delve into the fascinating journey of Williams' works and their impact on the world of theater.

Discovering the Early Genius

Tennessee Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams III in Columbus, Mississippi in 1911, displayed his literary talents from a young age. He was an avid reader and writer, immersing himself in the works of influential playwrights such as Chekhov and Ibsen. Williams' first taste of success came in 1944 when his play "The Glass Menagerie" premiered in Chicago and later moved to Broadway, captivating audiences with its poignant exploration of family dynamics and the fragility of dreams.

Following the success of "The Glass Menagerie," Williams continued to push the boundaries of American theater with his subsequent works. Plays like "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" showcased his ability to depict the raw emotions and complexities of human relationships. His characters and their struggles resonated deeply with audiences, earning him a reputation as a master storyteller.

The essays in this volume were all written by David Kaplan in conjunction with the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival, of which he is the curator and a co-founder. They are organized in two sections. The first section consists of ten essays written for each year of the Provincetown Festival, most included in the Festival catalogue for the year indicated. Those essays focus on each year’s thematic selection of Williams plays—and other dance, music, and theater events—as well as some aspect of Williams’ plays not always obvious in the text but essential to understanding the plays in production. The second section includes seven occasional essays, written for productions of Williams plays associated with the Festival. All the essays relate, in one way or another, to the story of what happened to the playwright during the last twenty years of his life and how his reputation is evolving since his death.
