Inside America Soccer Feud Between MLS, NASL, and USL
Over the years, the landscape of professional soccer in America has been marked by a heated rivalry between the MLS, NASL, and USL. The clash between these leagues, fueled by the pursuit of supremacy and financial gain, has created a fascinating narrative that leaves fans and players alike on the edge of their seats.
The MLS Reign
Since its establishment in 1993, the Major League Soccer (MLS) has dominated the American soccer scene. Backed by robust investments, lucrative television deals, and a growing fan base, the MLS has managed to attract top-notch international players, elevating the league's status globally.
However, this ascent to the top has not come without its challenges. The NASL, or North American Soccer League, emerged as a competitor to the MLS, vying for attention and recognition. The NASL sought to recreate the glory days of the old North American Soccer League that operated from 1968 to 1984.

The NASL's Ambitious Pursuit
The NASL, founded in 2009, aimed to become a major player in the American soccer landscape, challenging the MLS's monopoly over top-tier soccer. The league adopted a different business model, offering more financial autonomy to its teams and adopting a promotion and relegation system.
The NASL successfully attracted several iconic teams with strong histories, such as the New York Cosmos, who had enjoyed success during the original NASL era. The inclusion of such teams created an enticing narrative for fans, pitting them against the established MLS powerhouses.
Despite initial successes and a passionate fan base, the NASL faced numerous obstacles. Financial instability, lawsuits, and difficulty securing expansion franchises hampered the league's growth. The absence of a substantial fan following and mainstream media support also posed challenges for the NASL.
The USL's Growing Influence
While the MLS and NASL battled it out for supremacy, the United Soccer League (USL) quietly ascended the ranks, establishing itself as a robust and reliable competition. The USL initially began as a Division 3 league and steadily grew in popularity and participation.
What set the USL apart from its rivals was its focus on building strong partnerships with MLS clubs. The USL formed affiliations and development partnerships with MLS teams, allowing for player loans and talent development. This collaboration significantly contributed to the growth of both leagues and provided a pathway for aspiring professionals.
The USL's approach, together with its financial stability and strategic expansion plans, eventually earned it the Division 2 status in the American soccer pyramid. This move further solidified its position and put it in direct competition with the NASL.
The Turbulent Soccer Landscape
As these three leagues battled for supremacy, a turbulent and uncertain soccer landscape began to emerge in America. The constant power struggles between the leagues disrupted player transfers, impacted expansion plans, and created uncertainty for fans.
Ultimately, the USL managed to secure Division 2 status, leaving the NASL in jeopardy. The NASL faced several setbacks, including lawsuits and loss of teams, resulting in its demotion to lower division status.
Despite its challenges, the NASL put up a fierce fight, refusing to surrender. The league continued to broker partnerships, seek expansion opportunities, and even explored potential collaborations with other leagues, both nationally and internationally.
The Dawn of a New Era
With the backdrop of changing dynamics and uncertainties, the soccer landscape in America continues to evolve. The MLS remains the dominant league, attracting top talent and expanding its reach. The USL has solidified its position as a reliable contributor to American soccer, while the NASL is slowly rebuilding.
While the feud between the MLS, NASL, and USL may have sparked division and controversies, it has undeniably driven growth and competition. Each league brings its unique flavor to the table, catering to different demographics of soccer enthusiasts.
The Future of American Soccer
As American soccer moves forward, it is crucial for the MLS, NASL, and USL to find common ground and work towards the long-term growth and sustainability of the sport. Collaboration, strategic partnerships, and a shared vision for the future can unlock the true potential of American soccer.
With continued investment, support, grassroots development, and a united front, the American soccer landscape has the potential to rival some of the biggest soccer nations around the globe. It is up to the respective leagues and their stakeholders to set aside differences and pave the way for a prosperous soccer future in America.
The soccer feud between the MLS, NASL, and USL has been a thrilling tale of competition, power struggles, and growth. While the MLS has reigned supreme, the NASL and USL have left their mark, each contributing to the overall development of American soccer.
As the dust settles and the future unfolds, the importance of collaboration and unified efforts cannot be understated. Only through alliances and shared goals can the American soccer landscape realize its true potential and achieve greatness in the global sporting arena.

Kartik Krishnaiyer, soccer journalist and one of the leading experts on the sport in the United States, takes you behind the scenes of the US soccer feud between MLS, USL and NASL. The book examines the role that the now disgraced Traffic Sports had within NASL, as well as the league's plans to challenge Major League Soccer's position as the top division in the United States.
What follows are the lessons the author learned behind the scenes, from when he joined the new NASL before it’d played its first game through the time he left its front office when a new group of ambitious leaders replaced those that had just come to grips with North American soccer’s realities. From its marriage with Traffic to reclaiming its storied name, from the halcyon days of unfettered ambition to US Soccer’s initial rebuke and the reset of year two, he saw NASL 2.0 go from dream to reality, and he knows what part of today’s rhetoric remains anchored in 2011’s dream.
