Unlocking the Wisdom: Practical Philosophy and the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant
Philosophy has always been a captivating field of study. It delves deep into the nature of existence, the pursuit of knowledge, and the complexities of human reasoning. One of the most influential philosophers of all time is Immanuel Kant, whose works have shaped the way we perceive the world and our place in it. Today, we explore the significance of practical philosophy and the invaluable resource that is the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant.
What is Practical Philosophy?
Practical philosophy is the branch of philosophy concerned with how individuals should live their lives and make ethical choices. It strives to discover moral principles that guide human actions, allowing us to navigate the complexities of human existence. Practical philosophy enables us to reflect on our values, actions, and responsibilities, providing valuable insights into living a meaningful and purposeful life.
One of the pioneers of practical philosophy is Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher who lived in the 18th century. Kant's philosophy emphasizes the importance of reason and rationality in determining moral principles. He argues that we have a duty to act morally, driven by a sense of obligation rather than personal desires or consequences. Kant's ethical theory, known as deontological ethics, provides a comprehensive framework for understanding our moral duties and cultivating a just society.

This 1997 book was the first English translation of all of Kant's writings on moral and political philosophy collected in a single volume. No other collection competes with the comprehensiveness of this one. As well as Kant's most famous moral and political writings, the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, the Critique of Practical Reason, the Metaphysics of Morals, and Toward Perpetual Peace, the volume includes shorter essays and reviews, some of which have never been translated before. The volume has been furnished with a substantial editorial apparatus including translator's s and explanatory notes to each text by Mary Gregor, and a general to Kant's moral and political philosophy by Allen Wood. There is also an English-German and German-English glossary of key terms.
