A Journey Through Time: Burlington's Historic Sites
Our first stop on the tour was the Burlington Art Centre, a vibrant hub for art enthusiasts. As we stepped inside, we were instantly captivated by the impressive collection of contemporary and traditional artworks displayed throughout the gallery. The knowledgeable staff were on hand to provide interesting insights and answer our questions, adding an extra layer of depth to our visit.
Next, we headed to Ireland House Museum, a charming Georgian-style farmhouse that dates back to 1837. The moment we stepped foot on the property, we were transported back in time. The rich history of the house came alive as we wandered through the beautifully restored rooms, admire the period furniture, and imagine life in early 19th-century Ontario.
One of the highlights of our tour was the Joseph Brant Museum, a stunning architectural gem that pays homage to the city's founding father. This newly renovated museum showcases Burlington's indigenous heritage and provides a comprehensive insight into the life and achievements of Joseph Brant – a remarkable historical figure who played a pivotal role in shaping the city.
Modern Marvels: Burlington's Architectural Wonders
As we progressed through the tour, we were constantly amazed by the diversity of architectural styles and innovative designs that Burlington had to offer. One of the standout sites was the Spencer Smith Park Pavilion, an iconic landmark located along the beautiful waterfront. This modern structure seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings, offering incredible panoramic views of Lake Ontario.
Another impressive modern marvel was the newly constructed Performing Arts Centre, a state-of-the-art facility that hosts a variety of performances and events throughout the year. From the moment we entered, we were impressed by the stunning design and acoustics of the theater. The passionate staff shared their enthusiasm for the arts and provided valuable insights into the construction and planning process.

The Ontario Heritage Trust works with communities across the province to open the doors, gates and courtyards of their unique and most fascinating cultural sites so you can explore the stories inside. Every April to October, many of Ontario’s heritage treasures are opened to the public with free events across the province. From historical houses to modern marvels of construction, Doors Open Ontario showcases the buildings, natural spaces, infrastructure and cultural landscapes that shape and define our communities. The program was launched in 2002 to allow people to learn about heritage conservation and local history. In 2019, the Ontario Heritage Trust explores the theme of communication by examining how verbal and written language, the preservation of language, technological innovation, communications systems and cross-cultural exchange have influenced Ontario’s cultural heritage. Communication connects us over space and time. It allows people to share ideas, knowledge, tradition and creativity from the past. Communication forges community and builds understanding. On September 28, 2019, Harry and I toured six places with my sister and her husband, Shirley and Edward. We began our tour of Burlington with a visit to Archaeological Services Inc. (ASI),the largest archaeological and heritage consultancy in Canada. Our next stop was to Nickel Brook Brewing Company for a tour describing the steps of how beer is brewed; we enjoyed a sample of root beer also made there. At the Freeman Railway Station, we toured the station and enjoyed the treat of songs about the railroad by a ukulele group, and the model train setup in the basement. Eglise Sainte Phillippe Church at 472 Locust Street was purchased in 1968 by the Roman Catholic Church and serves the people in the French language. Joseph Brant Museum was still under construction but the basic museum was open for us to learn about the growth of Burlington; a history of Joseph Brant was informative. We saw both the old and the new St. Paul’s Churches on Highway 5 to end our day.
