One of the key commanders in the North German campaign was Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, the Prussian Field Marshal. Blücher was known for his aggressive and bold tactics, earning him the nickname "Marshal Forward." His leadership proved vital in the battles of Lützen, Bautzen, and Leipzig, where the Prussian forces achieved significant victories over Napoleon's army.
Blücher's partnership with General August von Gneisenau was crucial to the success of the North German campaign. Gneisenau, known for his ability to plan and execute complex military operations, complemented Blücher's fiery temperament with a more pragmatic approach. Together, they devised strategies that exploited Napoleon's weaknesses and maximized the effectiveness of the Prussian forces.
The French side was led by Napoleon Bonaparte, one of history's greatest military commanders. Commanding the Grande Armée, Napoleon had built a formidable reputation through his victories in previous campaigns. However, the Franco Prussian War would prove to be a different challenge altogether.
Napoleon faced several difficulties during the North German campaign, including the vast size of the combined Prussian and Russian armies. Moreover, the extended lines of communication and supply stretched French resources and made it difficult to sustain their operations effectively.
The Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of Nations, was a turning point in the campaign. This battle saw Napoleon's forces heavily outnumbered, and in the face of combined Prussian, Russian, and Austrian forces, he suffered a decisive defeat. It resulted in the retreat of the French army from German soil, effectively ending Napoleon's control over the region.
The Franco Prussian War in North Germany showcased the changing nature of warfare in the 19th century. Technological advancements, such as rifled artillery and improved transportation systems, played a significant role in shaping the strategies employed by the commanders. The use of railways for troop transportation and supply allowed for quicker mobilization and better coordination.
Another commander who played a crucial role in the North German campaigns was Tsar Alexander I of Russia. His diplomatic skills and military leadership were instrumental in creating and maintaining the coalition against Napoleon. The cooperation between the Prussian, Russian, and Austrian forces brought together a diverse range of tactics and strategies, enabling them to effectively counter the French army.

At a time when Napoleon needed all his forces to reassert French dominance in Central Europe, why did he fixate on the Prussian capital of Berlin? Instead of concentrating his forces for a decisive showdown with the enemy, he repeatedly detached large numbers of troops, under ineffective commanders, toward the capture of Berlin. In Napoleon and Berlin, Michael V. Leggiere explores Napoleon’s almost obsessive desire to capture Berlin and how this strategy ultimately lost him all of Germany.
Napoleon’s motives have remained a subject of controversy from his own day until ours. He may have hoped to deliver a tremendous blow to Prussia’s war-making capacity and morale. Ironically, the heavy losses and strategic reverses sustained by the French left Napoleon’s Grande Armee vulnerable to an Allied coalition that eventually drove Napoleon from Central Europe forever.
