After months of careful planning and preparation, the couple finally made the decision to embark on their own ocean crossing. They spent countless hours studying navigation, weather patterns, and safety protocols. The excitement was palpable as they rigged their sailboat, stocked up on supplies, and bid farewell to their loved ones.

The Journey Begins

As Jake and Emily set out to sea, they were filled with a mix of anticipation and nerves. The first few days were a test of their sailing skills, as they encountered strong winds and turbulent waves. But as they settled into their rhythm, a sense of tranquility washed over them.

The couple fell into a routine, taking turns on watch duty, cooking meals in their tiny galley, and reflecting on the vastness of the ocean that surrounded them. Their days were spent marveling at the breathtaking sunsets and the beauty of the starlit night sky.

The Challenges of Ocean Crossing

Crossing an ocean in a small sailboat is no easy feat. Jake and Emily encountered numerous challenges along the way, from unpredictable weather conditions to mechanical failures. They battled storms that tested their resolve and tested the strength of their sailboat.

During one particularly rough night, a massive wave crashed onto the boat, causing significant damage. But through sheer determination and their collective sailing expertise, they managed to repair the vessel and continue on their journey.

Isolation was another hurdle they faced. Being out at sea for weeks on end, with no sight of land or other human beings, can take a toll on one's mental well-being. But Jake and Emily found solace in each other's company, taking solace in the fact that they were experiencing something truly extraordinary together.

The Rewards of the Journey

After weeks of relentless sailing, battling the elements, and pushing themselves to the limits, Jake and Emily finally reached their destination – a small island paradise in the middle of the ocean. The sense of achievement and fulfillment they felt was indescribable.

They were welcomed by warm locals who marveled at their incredible journey and celebrated their adventurous spirits. The couple spent days exploring the island, reveling in the natural beauty, and reflecting on the incredible experiences they had gained throughout their ocean crossing.

A Life-Changing Adventure

Jake and Emily's journey across the vast ocean in a small sailboat was undoubtedly challenging, but it was also an adventure that changed their lives forever. It taught them the importance of resilience, teamwork, and the power of human determination.

As they sailed back home, their hearts were filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences and the strong bond they had formed. They now had a newfound respect for the vastness of the ocean and the wonders it holds.

So, if you've ever dreamed of crossing an ocean in a small sailboat, let Jake and Emily's story inspire you. Embrace the unknown, face the challenges head-on, and discover the true meaning of adventure. The open sea is waiting for you, ready to reveal its secrets and transform your life.

For several years we had dreamed about buying (or building) an ocean-going sailboat and sailing around the world. A good friend who just happened to be a yacht designer, marine surveyor and boat builder agreed - for a fee of course - to help us achieve our dream.

And so it was that our dream soon developed into a plan, and our plan became reality in the form of a custom designed, self-built, 38 foot wood epoxy cutter named 'Alacazam'.

It was time to take the next step, so along with my skipper and partner in all things, Dick McClary, we took a collective gulp and resigned from our relatively well paid and secure office jobs ashore, and moved aboard.

We were in no rush, there would several summer months to fill before setting off on the 3,000 nautical mile crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. So via a leisurely cruise south via France, Spain, Portugal, Madeira we arrived at our departure point, Tenerife in the Canary Islands. These offshore passages were not without their moments, but the 'big one' was yet to come.

This is my story of our first Atlantic Crossing. I'm Mary Swift, the relatively inexperienced female half of the crew. My skipper describes it as a 'warts and all' tale from a female perspective where most of the warts are his. I don't know why he says that...
