The Turbulent Politics Of Sport In Pakistan
Sport has always held a special place in the hearts of people around the world. Whether it's the Olympic Games, football World Cup, or any other sporting event, it has the power to unite people and transcend boundaries. However, in some countries, sports not only serve as a platform for athletic competition but also become entangled in the complex web of politics. One such country is Pakistan, a nation where the tumultuous world of politics has had a profound impact on its sports landscape.
The Historic Ties Between Sports and Politics
In Pakistan, the relationship between sports and politics runs deep. It dates back to the country's very inception in 1947. From the early years, sports became a symbol of national identity and solidarity. Cricket, in particular, emerged as a unifying factor, capturing the attention and passion of millions.
However, as time went on, sports in Pakistan became susceptible to external influences and internal power struggles. The troubled relationship between India and Pakistan spilled over into the sporting arenas, leading to numerous controversies and bitter rivalries on the field.

Cricket: A Battleground of Politics
No sport in Pakistan is as entangled in politics as cricket. The intense cricketing rivalry between India and Pakistan has often been exploited to fuel nationalist sentiments and divert attention from pressing domestic issues. Matches between the two nations are not just a game; they are a reflection of the larger political tensions that exist between the two countries.
The world witnessed the intricate connections between sports and politics during the 2011 World Cup semifinal between India and Pakistan. As both nations faced off on the cricket field, millions of fans watched with fervor and enthusiasm. However, in that charged environment, politicians from both sides used the event as a platform to showcase their nationalist agendas. The match became a battleground where the real contest was not just between the players but also between politicians seeking to gain public support.
The Suspended Football Federation
Football, often overshadowed by cricket, has also experienced the turbulent politics of Pakistan. In 2015, the country's football federation was suspended by FIFA due to political interference. The corruption and power struggles within the federation had crippled the growth of the sport in the country and tarnished its reputation internationally.
The suspension was a wake-up call for the Pakistani government and sports authorities, highlighting the need for depoliticizing sports and allowing athletes to focus on their game instead of being pawns in political battles.
Politics' Stranglehold on Other Sports
While cricket and football may grab most of the attention, other sports in Pakistan have also fallen prey to political interference. Wrestling, hockey, and even individual sports like boxing and squash have been neglected and undermined due to a lack of funding and political support.
Athletes, who should be receiving the necessary resources and opportunities to excel in their chosen sports, are often left to fend for themselves due to the prevailing political climate. The consequences are evident in dwindling performances and a lack of representation on the global stage.
The Way Forward
The troubled politics of sport in Pakistan cannot be taken lightly. It is imperative for the government and sporting bodies to recognize the importance of depoliticizing sports and providing a conducive environment for athletes to thrive. This includes promoting sports at the grassroots level, investing in infrastructure, and developing a framework that ensures transparency and accountability within sports organizations.
Efforts must also be made to separate sports from political rivalries and nationalistic agendas. While friendly competition between nations is healthy, it should not be used as a tool to fuel hatred or distract the public from pressing issues. Sports should serve as a unifying force, bringing people together rather than driving them apart.
The turbulent politics of sport in Pakistan have hindered the growth and development of various sports in the country. Cricket, football, and other games have become victims of power struggles and external influences. It is high time that Pakistan reevaluates the role of politics in sports and takes necessary steps to ensure a fair and transparent sporting landscape for its athletes. Only then can the nation fully harness the potential of its athletic talents and find unity in the joy of sports.

Pakistan is a country beset with politicised instabilities, economic problems, ethnic conflicts, religious fervour and crises of identity. It is also a country in which the game of cricket has become a nationwide obsession. How has that happened? How does a Muslim country, jealous of its independence and determined to forge a Pakistani identity, so passionately embrace the alien gentleman's game imported by the distant and departed former colonial masters? What do we learn of Pakistan from its attitudes and responses to cricket? This book sees Pakistan - its history, politics and society - through the prism of cricket. Shaharyar Khan and Ali Khan describe how cricket defines national identity and boosts morale even while Pakistan struggles to contain internal political conflict and the influence of the Taliban near and within its borders; they show how the game shapes the political, social and cultural landscape of Pakistan and its fractured relations with India. But with recent betting scandals and accusations of spot-fixing throwing Pakistani cricket into the global media spotlight, what does cricket tell us about condition of Pakistani society today?
The former Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, a man with an unparalleled insight into the establishment, Shaharyar Khan examines how this very Western sport came to embed itself in the psyche of Pakistanis old and young, transcending social and class boundaries. The authors illuminate Pakistan for readers by offering an unusual and highly original perspective - that in understanding the state of cricket in Pakistan, can we gain a deeper understanding of the state of Pakistan itself. Demonstrating how the turbulence around cricket has much wider political implications, this book will fascinate general readers and cricket enthusiasts, at the same time proving essential reading for observers of Pakistan, India and the South Asia region.
