Few people were able to travel to Cambodia in the early 1990s. The country was still wracked by civil war and the United Nations were attempting to hold a fragile peace prior to elections.
Graham Thomas went there to both talk to the people and to create a photographic record of the capital and surrounding area. 'I couldn't travel far from the city then as fighting was taking place, and the countryside still riddled with mines.'
He was, though, able to talk to people about their hopes and worries for the future; as well as capture their faces and their lives.
'I haven't been back since but I know that it has changed enormously, beyond what I expected. The horror of course can never be covered up or forgotten but the Cambodian people are, at long last, living more peaceful lives.'
'An extraordinary book.' says Lida Hourn from Phnom Penh. 'It will be an eternal reminder of what we used to be like. It is remarkable so few records exist from that time.'
' For reasons that we don't know, few outsiders came to Cambodia at that time to try and ask why? It was almost as if the rest of the world wanted to forget us. Were we too much trouble?' Dith Pour Nol.
This book is a small attempt to put this right. Not to dwell on the past but not to gloss over it either.
