In this article, we will delve into the fascinating world of Buot Balintawak Eskrima, exploring its origins, techniques, and significance in today's combat training scene.

A Journey through History

Buot Balintawak Eskrima traces its roots back to the early 1900s in Cebu, Philippines. It was developed by Grandmaster Anciong Bacon, a legendary figure known for his martial arts prowess. With his profound knowledge and experience in various fighting styles, Bacon fused different techniques to create an efficient and effective fighting system. The art was later passed down to his student, the esteemed Grandmaster Venancio "Anciong" Bacon, who continued to refine and promote its teachings.

The name "Buot Balintawak" refers to a small street in Cebu where the original Balintawak Club was located. This club served as the birthplace of the art, where practitioners would gather to train and exchange knowledge. Under Anciong Bacon's guidance, the techniques of Buot Balintawak Eskrima were developed to be practical and adaptable in real-life combat situations, ensuring that practitioners can defend themselves effectively.

Eskrima stick fighting is indigenous to the Philippines and in the 1950s one of the most popular styles emerged: Balintawak. To appreciate Anciong Bacon’s Balintawak Eskrima, you have to understand set-ups, anticipation, the art of outwitting through ruses and lures; economy and simplification of motion, sans lavish and squandered movements; effective strikes fused and bonded with speed, power, elegance and grace. That is the essence of Anciong’s Balintawak and these are the methods Sam Buot explains and demonstrates in this book.

Written from the author’s half-century of personal experience and hard-earned knowledge, Buot Balintawak Eskrima Second Edition represents the art from origin to modern times, as a fighting art, as a cultural tradition and a means of personal development. Illustrated with nearly 700 historical and instructional photographs, this book is a must-have for all martial artists and those interested in the history of a people and their fight art. This new Second Edition is revised and expanded with even more techniques and insights into this amazing art.

At 83, Sam is now retired and teaches eskrima in his backyard in Phoenix, Arizona.
