When it comes to the juvenile justice system in America, the name Edward Humes is synonymous with groundbreaking investigative journalism. In his critically acclaimed book, "The Boys", Humes delves deep into the lives of four young boys who find themselves entangled in the web of the criminal justice system. With meticulous research and heart-wrenching storytelling, he exposes the flaws and injustices that plague the system, leaving readers both shocked and determined for change.

The Click That Changed Everything

It all started with a single click. Humes stumbled upon an online news article about a 14-year-old boy sentenced to life without parole for a crime he committed when he was just 12 years old. This shocking revelation inspired him to dig deeper into the stories of juvenile offenders and the far-reaching consequences of their actions.

What he discovered was a troubling reality - a system designed to rehabilitate young offenders was failing miserably, instead perpetuating a cycle of crime and punishment. Humes decided to shine a light on this issue, using the stories of four boys from different backgrounds to illustrate the systemic problems that plague the American juvenile justice system.

The Stories That Shocked the Nation

Humes introduces us to Jake, a charismatic teenager from a disadvantaged neighborhood who falls prey to the allure of gang life; Billy, a young boy whose mental health struggles go unnoticed until tragedy strikes; Oscar, a bright student who makes one fateful mistake; and Hector, an immigrant caught between his loyalty to his family and the pressures of his environment.

Through their stories, Humes paints a vivid picture of the factors that contribute to juvenile crime - poverty, inadequate education, drug addiction, and mental health issues, to name just a few. He skillfully weaves together their narratives, creating a compelling tapestry that exposes the harsh reality faced by countless young offenders.

The Broken System

One of the most eye-opening revelations in Humes' book is the overreliance on incarceration as a solution to juvenile crime. He reveals how the United States leads the world in the number of young people behind bars, with overcrowded detention centers becoming breeding grounds for further criminal behavior.

Humes argues that this approach not only fails to address the root causes of juvenile crime but also contributes to a never-ending cycle of imprisonment. He calls for a reimagining of the system, advocating for alternatives to incarceration such as community-based programs and restorative justice.

The Emotional Toll

Perhaps the most heart-wrenching aspect of "The Boys" is the toll it takes on the young offenders and their families. Humes highlights the emotional trauma experienced by those caught in the clutches of the criminal justice system. From the courtroom dramas to the long periods of separation from loved ones, Humes captures the devastating effects of the system on the lives of these boys and their families.

The Call for Change

"The Boys" is not merely a catalog of despair, but a call to action. Humes challenges readers to question the effectiveness and fairness of the juvenile justice system. He encourages us to confront the uncomfortable truths and demand change from policymakers, educators, and the broader community.

As readers turn the last page of "The Boys", they are left with a sense of urgency and a renewed commitment to advocating for a more compassionate and equitable justice system for all young offenders.

Edward Humes' "The Boys" is a captivating and deeply unsettling exploration of America's criminal justice system and its impact on young offenders. Through powerful storytelling and relentless investigative journalism, Humes reveals the flaws and injustices that have been swept under the rug for far too long. This thought-provoking book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of our society and believes in the power of change.

"boys." is a collection of poems that marked the start of my dating odyssey.  these poems are chronicles of how i felt for a few of those boys. totally recommend. it's got everything you want from a story except it's not a story, it's poems! mysterious men, explicit behavior, budding romance, summer flings, elusive closures, and even some who got away, ooo. (note: every chapter was written, beginning to end, during my time with said person)

i wrote these thoughts down and put line breaks in between them because they look prettier that way, but mostly because i had no more space inside to store the emotion and it spilled it's way onto paper.

i hope that those who love in excess can find respite in these words.
