In compiling this book, I have used many photos that I took a long time ago along with some recent photos. Although I’ve used several of my photographs with articles that have been published in magazines and newspapers, I am not a professional photographer. I’m only using everyday cameras, not professional, high-quality camera equipment.
I have studied nature since childhood and founded the Golden Sparrow Nature Society in 2009. In addition, I’m a member of Hoosier Outdoor Writers and have written about hunting, fishing, conservation and nature for many years. Nature is an underlying theme in many of my books.
I have loved nature all my life. Birds especially have always fascinated me. I did not know I was going to publish this book until January of 2016. If I had known, I could have taken more photos much earlier. Over the years, I have photographed many birds, animals, butterflies and even insects. In this book, I have 263 of my own photos and 64 other photos or paintings.
Because I love sharing my enthusiasm and knowledge of nature, I thought I would share it through this book. I have included the most common birds you are likely to see at your feeders, in your yard, or as you are driving down the highway. I have also included some gorgeous ones that people raise, and some that are rare in the wild.
Since I can edit this e-book at any time, as I get more or better photos I will add them. Some of the birds and animals I did not have photos of my own and I had to use photos by other’s or paintings. Maybe in the near future I will have all that I need. I believe the ones I have used are interesting and can help many people learn the different birds that might come to backyard feeding stations, visit people’s property, or be seen in the fields and nearby forests.
I have photos of several common animals and a few rarely seen ones that live in Southern Indiana, as well as many other states. Many people may not know some of the animals that live right here around us. I have also included birds and animals that once lived in Southern Indiana, but have disappeared.
Even though this book contains nearly 47,000 words, it is a good idea to get a field guide to help in identification of the birds. I cannot have a photo of every male, female or immature bird species that you are likely to see. I have listed the main ones, however, and a few that are exceptional. I believe this book will cover over ninety percent of the birds you are likely to encounter, as well as most mammals and other common turtles, lizards and salamanders.
In addition, if you get a good field guide it will show the ranges of every bird and large mammal, so you can check and see where they live in and outside of Indiana. My book is to show what I’ve seen in Southern Indiana and what you are also likely to see.
