Most directors will tell you auditioning is the hardest part of the production/rehearsal process. If this is true, why then do directing classes and directing books spend little if any time on this process of auditioning? What do you look for in a prospective cast member or auditioner? How do you judge, in the few minutes you have, how well this person in front of you will perform in your production? What types of processes exist for auditions? Which one is the “best”? What techniques can you use to audition actors and actresses? Which technique is the “best”? How do you make your final decisions after the auditions have completed? How do you deal with a rejection by an actor? Should you cast understudies? When should you cast understudies? These questions are the impetus for this book.
Allen Moore has been auditioning prospective cast members for productions since 1993. In that time, he has assisted and coordinated auditions for elementary, middle school, high school and college productions; adult productions; church productions involving all age groups; and community theatre productions also involving a mixture of all of these age groups. The production types have run the gamut from one-act plays to full-length plays and musicals. In that time, he has developed and experimented with a variety of techniques for each of the audition settings. For most of these productions, he has been the director and, as such, primary decision maker for the casting. It is from this experience, and the comments and anecdotes from others, that this book is written.
